Items I’m Buying for the ICU

There are a few things I’ll need going from OR nursing to ICU nursing. I’ve already bought a new work bag, some miscellaneous items like pens, notebooks, zippered pouches, and I’ve ordered a pair of scrubs to see if I like them. I have my eyes on some FIGS scrubs, but I’m holding out a little longer. That is one thing I’ll miss about OR nursing- you don’t have to purchase or launder your scrubs! (There are a lot of other good things about OR nursing). I’ll also have to make sure my hair looks presentable since I won’t be wearing a scrub cap. First up is the BAGSMART bag. I already love this bag. I didn’t realize it until after it arrived, but it was one that I’ve seen many times shared by other nurses on social media and always thought “If I actually needed to bring a bag back and forth to work, I’d want this one!” Little did I know.

Next up is this pencil pouch. I didn’t imagine that I would need anything other than a few pens, but multiple of the nurses recommended to get pens, pencils, highlighters, etc. So, I needed something to keep them in of course. It has so much room inside and has a nice flip down panel that I intend to put my most used items in. It also has a small pocket on the side.

I ordered this zippered pouch set to put things like medicine, chargers, personal hygiene items, etc. They are sturdy while still being flexible. They are transparent, which I do like, but if you wanted things less visible these wouldn’t work for you.

I also ordered a set of new scissors, the ones I currently have are in desperate need of replacing I just always forget by the time I have time to do it! I’m excited to see how these ones hold up.

Now that I had a pencil pouch I needed some things to fill it with. I have PLENTY of pens at home, my favorite pens are the Sharpie S Gel pens. I’ve used nothing but these for the last few years. The only thing I do not use them for is writing on specimen labels because they will smear. I have plenty of pencils at home, but most of the erasers have been destroyed by my kids, so I ordered myself a brand new pack that are pretty cute!

I ordered these scrub pants based off of a recommendation- I don’t dislike them, but I don’t love them. The review say to be cautious of sizing, so if you have time to exchange for a new size it may be worth trying them out. I also ordered the matching scrub top, but I was not a fan of it.

I’m sure there are a few more items I’ll need to buy, but for now this will do! There are some other items I’ve put in my bag that I already owned, like my stethoscope. I ‘borrowed’ my husband’s stethoscope case since he no longer uses it. He doesn’t know it yet, but I also intend to ‘borrow’ his all matte black stethoscope. Drop a comment below if there is anything you think would be beneficial for this transition! I know I’ll need plenty of sleep and caffeine!
